Darien Exposes New Canaan; Takes on Staples in State Quarterfinals

Darien defeated New Canaan for the fourth straight year on Thanksgiving, winning the game 28-21. With the win, Darien collected its second straight FCIAC Championship. New Canaan started the game off strong with a blocked punt on Darien's first drive and scored quickly, but it was all Darien after that, as Timmy Graham had a career day against the Rams. Graham was named the MVP after throwing four touchdowns and passing for over 400 yards, and proved himself as one of the best QB's in the FCIAC.

The Blue Wave now faces Staples High School for the second time this season, this time though in the State quarterfinals. Darien holds the #2 seed in the bracket, while Staples is the #7. The game is at 6:30pm, Tuesday night at Brien McMahon.

Wave Soccer Rolls into State Semi Final

By Felix Rooney
The Darien High School Soccer Team has continued its record setting season. For the first time they reached the FCIAC Final, but unfortunately fell to Fairfield Ludlowe 2-1. During a hard fought game, the Blue Wave let up two “Questionable” goals in a game they arguably should have won. They are currently preparing to play Farmington in the State semi-finals as they try to be the first Darien team to reach the State finals and the FCIAC finals in the same season. Fans are excited to see if junior Pablo Martinez can continue his goal scoring streak and bring the ship home.
When asked if he was going to the game, Army Noonan had no comment, which for him is a thundering yes. We hope you will join Army on Tuesday in Naugatuck. Special Shout out to senior’s Jack Payne, Charlie Dean, and Charlie Miller, the superfans for wave footy who have yet to miss a game.

Darien Football Advances to FCIAC Championship with Win Over Staples

Saturday the Blue Wave took on Staples High School in one of the most anticipated games of the year. For the first time all season Darien was held to less than 40 points and the victory margin was less than 30 points. The Wave defense was dominant in this game shutting out a very strong Staples offense. Two punt blocks also contributed to the commanding defensive performance. Senior Mark Evanchick helped spark the defense with three sacks, which propelled him past Dwight Freeney to become the all-time sack leader in the Connecticut.
Darien's offense had an unusual sloppy game with a couple turnovers and some missed opportunities. It was not all bad new, as the Wave were able to put up 27 points. Staples proved to be a good test the Blue Wave move towards the playoffs. Darien's next game is on Thanksgiving against rival New Canaan for the FCIAC championship.

Darien Faces Staples for a Chance at the FCIAC Ship

Following a relatively easy schedule, the Darien football team will face its' fist major challenge this year against Staples this coming Saturday. The game holds major implications, as the winner will be given the opportunity to play for the FCIAC Championship against New Canaan most likely. Along with this, the Football seniors will be celebrated pregame in what may be the last home game of the season for the Blue Wave. The Blue Wave are currently 7-0, and have also unofficially qualified for the Class LL State tournament. The biggest occurrence that may happen on Saturday though is Mark Evanchick breaking the State sack record, as he is one sack away from breaking Dwight Freeney's record.

The game is at 1 pm at DHS.

Darien Soccer Falls in FCIAC Finals

Darien soccer had a historic run in the FCIAC tournament being the first team in school history to make the finals. The Blue Wave took on Fairfield Ludlowe, who gave them their only loss on the season. The game was full of intensity right from the kickoff. It was evident early on that the game would come down to a battle of the defenses as there was no scoring in the first half. Ludlowe broke the ice with t a goal early in the second half. Darien answered late with a goal by junior Pablo Martinez, which tied the game with a little over 8 minutes left in the game. Unfortunately, Ludlowe was able to net a goal in the final few minutes of the game. This proved to be the game winner and handed Darien there second loss of the season.
It's not all bad news as Wave soccer has made school history and they have clinched a birth in the state playoffs.
