The Darien High School Girls Wrestling team defeated Norwalk on Saturday, March 30th at Brian McMahon High School in Norwalk. Going head to head in the last tournament of the season, Norwalk was undefeated while Darien had won 3 tournaments and lost 2. Within the three matches, Norwalk was in the lead having won all but one. As the matches continued, junior Sam Mitlow was in a match against one of Norwalk’s best wrestler’s, junior Jessie Berlup. Mitlow did a takedown on Berlup giving Darien 2 points. Unexpectedly Berlup changed the control and did a reversal giving Norwalk 2 points as well. Mitlow escaped the reversal for 1 point and performed a near fall on Berlup, holding both shoulders down 3 inches off the mat for five minutes giving Darien 3 points. This put Darien and Norwalk at a tie each having won 2 matches with only three matches left. The next match was won by Norwalk with 9 points and Darien 6 points, leaving the few matches a nail biter. Heading into the last match, Norwalk and Darien were tied with 6 matches each. Senior Beatrice Wasper went into the last match for Norwalk against Senior Brittany Minder for Darien. Minder did a takedown, pushing Wasper to the mat giving Darien 2 points. Just as Minder thought she had control, Wasper escaped giving Norwalk 1 point. As Wasper started taking control, the referee awarded 2 penalty points for Darien because of Wasper’s illegal hold. Within seconds later, Minder took control again and pinned Wasper, giving Darien a total of 7 matches won and Norwalk 6, making Darien the winners of the 2013 Girls Wrestling Tournament. Asking the DHS Girls Wrestling team its thoughts on the victorious win they responded, ‘It was definitely some of our harder matches, Norwalk plays rough and it wasn’t easy, but we had fun and ended up as champs"
