While most Darien High School spring athletes head
to the track and the turf and grass fields for practice after school, the
Darien High School sailing team travels to Noroton Yacht Club for practice on
the water.
The sailing team is captained by seniors Sarah Graves,
Mac Bartram, and Nick Connery. The captains are looking forward to an exciting
season. “We have a lot of new freshmen who are learning how to sail 420s and
how to race so we are definitely in a building year, but we've made progress
already and have some good upperclassmen as well,” captain Graves said. “I’m
getting the feeling that all the underclassman that joined the team are hard
workers and want to succeed,” captain Nick Connery added.
Senior Amanda
Sommi will also be a talented new member of the sailing team this spring. Sommi
plans to sail at Tufts College next year. “I am very excited to be a part of
this team for the first time this spring. It is a great group of people, and
practice is very competitive. It's been really fun and challenging for me to
see this side of sailing, and I think we are going to have a great year,” Sommi
said.
The team hopes to have an undefeated record this
season and to beat rivals from the Greenwich High School Sailing Team. The team
also hopes to place regionally and nationally this season. “In the past we've
placed in New England’s and Nationals. It would be awesome to make it to those
regattas again,” Graves said.
