On Friday, December 21st, the Darien High School Girls Hockey team faced off against Morristown-Beard in New Jersey. According to Hallie Kreppin, the team’s starting goalie, the team “really wanted to bounce back from [their] game against New Canaan with a solid win, because [Morristown-Beard is] a very good team”. In the first period Morristown-Beard scored twice in a row when they had penalties. Morristown-Beard played a hard game, and DHS had to make sure to calm down a little and plan smarter passes and shoot more on the net. By the end of the first period the score was 2-0 Morristown-Beard. According to Kreppin, “nobody scored in the second period but it was really evenly played, and both teams had good chances to score”. In the middle of the third period, Shea Ven Den Broek scored on behalf of DHS, pulling the score up to 2-1. Ven Den Broek’s shot revived the team’s confidence. By the end of the third period Morristown-Beard had gotten a penalty, and DHS pulled the goalie to get an extra skater on the ice, so it was 6 against 4. Morristown-Beard then received another penalty, making it 6 against 3. DHS was dominating on the ice but according to Kreppin, “the team really had no solid chance to score which was frustrating”. Morristown-Beard scored in an empty net with about a minute left making the score 3-1, which was the game’s final score. Overall, the game was a pretty frustrating loss for the DHS team. However, the game was well played on both sides, and could have gone either way. Kreppin explained, “I think the most frustrating part of the game was when we were 6 on 3, and could not score to tie it up, even though we had double the players on the ice. However, I think we put in a good effort and they had a few more lucky bounces than us. I think that Catherine Martin and Ceci Stein together really held together the defense, and hustled to every puck. Shea Ven Den Broek played great with her line because they scored the only goal for our team. I definitely think that we learned from our two loses against Morristown-Beard and New Canaan and will help us work harder to make sure it never happens again”.
Next Game date: DHS Vs. Simsbury on January 5th
