There may still be snow on the ground, but the courts at Darien High School and over at Weed Beach have been cleared as the Girls Tennis team prepares to redeem their shot for a chance to be Class L State champions this year. Last season, the FCIAC champion (for the first time since 1997) and undefeated varsity team was forced to forfeit their placement in the state tournament due to an over-scheduling issue of one of the team members. Playing as a number one seed and hot off of an win against Wilton in the first round of the tournament, the girls stepped down from their path to victory.
However this spring season, the team is bouncing back strong. Senior captains Kateri Martin, Mia Dursht and Susie Alptekin plan on leading the team straight back into the tournament, with no regulations standing in their way to a state championship. Juniors Daphne Gray, Emilia Callery and Julia Tong will also serve as formidable forces for the team both in singles and doubles matches. Following their undefeated record of 19-0 from last season, the team has some big shoes to fill in order to rightfully earn their spot in the state championships this year; however they are confident that it won’t be too hard. Catch the team at their first home match of the season on 4/3 against Greenwich.
