With their spring season fast approaching, Darien High School’s Varsity Sailing Team is preparing to take on its competition. With their first team-racing regatta on March 29, the team has a lot to do to prepare for their upcoming season. Their season began this Monday, March 21st, led by captains Brooks Daley, Jensen Peters, Maddie Keane, and Ryan Jones. Keane expressed her excitement for the season ahead, but also described some challenges the team will face. “This season will be a little different due to our change in location. We normally sail out of Noroton Yacht Club, but while it is under construction, we will be sailing out of Norwalk Yacht Club. One of the challenges we will be facing this year will reconstructing the team. We lost quite a few sailors but I still think we can be strong if we work hard,” Keane said.
With 6 new sailors trying out for the team this year, the team has a strong chance of compensating for the loss in sailors, and perhaps even coming out of the tryout process stronger than ever.
Keane’s strategy for making sure the team is working hard is by setting individual goals for herself . “My goal this year is to qualify for the Rebecca Herreshoff Regatta, which is the Women’s Championship and Gold Cup, which is FCIACs,” Keane said.
