Boys Hockey Name Chris Gerwig as Head Coach

By Jay Alter - After spending the last 14 seasons coaching Trinity Catholic, Chris Gerwig will return to his roots of Darien Hockey and hold the same position. Gerwig started his passion for hockey as a member of Darien Youth Hockey Association and even works in Darien at the best hockey shop in the town, Blueline, owned by Jaime Tropsa, Darien Girl's Varsity Assistant Coach. "I'm a product of Darien Youth Hockey. It's where I work, where I spend most days, so it's a nice opportunity," Gerwig said. Gerwig will replace Larry Vieira who spent two years at the helm of the hockey team, but was let go after two seasons despite having winning records. Vieira's faults came because the team was not able to advance deep into the FCIAC or CIAC tournaments. Darien's Athletic Director thinks Gerwig will be a better fit, "We are very pleased to have a person with Chris' background and experience come to Darien," said John Keleher. "His experience, practice and conditioning plans, ad his bench demeanor and discipline were all factors in his selection," Keleher continued. Senior Captain Hank Glick said, "We are excited about the new addition to the hockey team and we're hoping he can bring us deep in both the fciacs and ciac." It is now up to Gerwig to get the wave back on track and hopefully capture a State title, something the Blue Wave haven't won since 1969.
