Dynamite Performance by Wave Basketball
-By: Taiki Miki-
Darien (2-12) came away with its second win of the season against Wilton (1-13) on Friday (2/4). With last place in FCIAC on the line, Darien came away with a big 63-60 win.
The first quarter was uneventful as both sides failed to make the shots. After the first quarter, it was 11-6. However, senior captain Ian Sullivan found his stroke in the second quarter, making three crucial 3-pointers in his 18-point-effort. The team succeeded even without senior captain Chris Stile because the team got great contributions from sophomores Drew Martzolf and Liam Naughton. At the half, Darien managed to take the lead, with the score of 25-24. In the second half, senior Charlie Kunze, who was quiet in the first half, contributed with 12 points. Kunze’s aggressive play-style also led to the injury of senior Michael Di Pilato of Wilton, who would end up coming back later in the game. There was a clear size disadvantage for Darien, as Wilton played its two tallest players for the majority of the game. But 6'6” senior Graham Hotchkiss played hard-nosed defense in the paint and also scored 15 points. Senior Chris Allam orchestrated the offense and made hard drives to the basket to keep Wilton off-balance and drawing numerous fouls. Although it was 42-36 after the 3rd quarter, Wilton managed to come back late in the 4th quarter due to many turnovers by Darien. However, Kunze closed out the game with a crucial layup.
When asked about how the second win of the season felt, Sullivan was nearly speechless. “It feels good, “he said. “(Chris) Allam hit a lot of foul shots and we did well.”
The team's next game is against FCIAC powerhouse St. Joseph (10-1) at 7pm at St. Joseph High School on Tuesday (2/8) at 7pm.
