Each February, a group of Darien High School field hockey players travels to Disney World in order to compete in the Disney Showcase field hockey tournament. This tournament brings together field hockey club teams from all across the United States for four days of field hockey games in Florida. The playing fields are located at Disney’s Wide World of Sports Complex just a few miles from the neighboring Disney World theme parks.
An overwhelming number of the Darien High School girls who participate in this tournament play for the Fairfield County (FC) United field hockey club team. Disney Showcase is one of two major nationwide college recruiting tournaments, the other being the National Field Hockey Festival that took place in Arizona in November.
Despite the relaxing atmosphere and pleasant temperatures in Florida in February, the girls travel to the Disney Showcase in hopes of being seen and eventually recruited by college field hockey coaches. “This year’s tournament was a lot of fun. It is such as great opportunity to be seen by coaches and is always an exciting tournament to participate in,” junior Sam Wright said. “It is such a high level of competition and brings together the best teams from all across the country so it’s definitely worthwhile,” junior Cammie Lattimer added. This year the FC United Red team finished 3rd place in their division at Disney Showcase.
