This past Thursday, the undefeated
Darien Blue Wave took on previously undefeated St. Josephs in a huge FCIAC
battle. Both teams needed this win to give them control over the FCIAC, and
both were determined to do so.
In the first half of the game, Darien’s
offense was sloppy, turning the ball over to St. Joes during crucial drives. By
halftime, the Cadets were leading 10-0 thanks to a stout Darien defense that
did not let anything through. St. Joes opened the second half with a touchdown,
giving them a 17-0 lead over the Blue Wave, and things started to look bad for
Darien. However, with a few key turnovers on the defensive side of things, the
offense began to click, and in only 3:03 in football time, Darien managed to
score 21 points, which was highlighted by a huge catch by senior Wide Receiver
Todd Herget.
As the momentum went on to Darien’s
side, there was nothing St. Joes could do. Junior Defensive End Mark Evanchick
continued his dominant season, grabbing three sacks in the game, bringing his
yearly total up to 10 sacks in only four games. As for first year Quarterback
Timmy Graham, he struggled early but was able to throw two perfect touchdown
passes in the second half to seal the deal for the Blue Wave.
The win puts Darien at 4-0 on the
season, and puts them at #2 in the state according to maxpreps.com. The Blue
Waves schedule lightens a bit after three out of their four games were against
state powerhouses, but challenges wait against Fairfield Warde this week. The
game is Saturday, October 11th at 2pm in Darien.
