By Jake Frasca,
Last Wednesday September 24, Darien High School’s Boys varsity
soccer team took on Trumbull at home. Heading into the game the Blue Wave was
2-3 after picking up a loss against rival New Canaan on 9/22.
Despite taking
the field with four missing starters, including senior Kai Bjornstad, juniors
Liam Rischmann and Jack Kniffin, and sophomore Sean Gallager, the Wave was able
to dominate in the all around physical game. There were not many scoring opportunities
allowed by Darien, led by strong defensive play from senior captain John
Mackie. Darien struck in the first half, with a goal by junior Hunter Kooyman
putting the Wave up 1-0. Trumbull was able to tie the score up in the second
half after continuous defensive pressure, but it wasn’t for long. Senior
captain Henrik Stockinger found the back of the net after a perfect volley set
up by timely cross.
The Wave was able
to hold the lead for the rest of game and consistently force turnovers.
Trumbull seemed to lack chemistry and simply were not able to keep up with the
physicality. It was a rather emotional finish that Darien needed, hopefully
they will be able to carry their success further on.
When asked about the game, Michael Maccarone mentioned, “This is a
great win for us to have under our belt, it’s always nice to come out on top in
these kind of games. Hopefully we will be at full strength in our lineup for
the rest of the season.”
Look forward to Darien’s upcoming game at Stamford High on Monday
October 6.
