On Monday October 20th both girls and boys team from across the county met at Waveny Park, New Canaan, for the annual cross-country FCIAC championships. The event was originally supposed to be on Thursday the 16th but was rescheduled due to rain. This change of plan did not stop the team, as they placed third out of 14 teams. The girls placed behind Staples High School of Westport and Ridgefield High School.
Varsity runners and seniors Anne Johnston and Amanda Percarpio placed second and tenth, respectively. Johnston ran for a final time of 14:39, putting her at a 5:54 mile time. Johnston finished just over a minute after junior Hannah DeBalsi of Staples, ranked number one in the nation for cross-country. Percarpio finished with a time of 15:18, with a mile time of 6:10.
All eight of the varsity runners that competed on Monday placed in the first 35 runners of the varsity run. Johnston and Percarpio medaled in first team all-FCIAC. Senior Kate Halabi, sophomore Ali Barnard, junior Sarah LeHan, and freshman Emilia Callery medaled in second team all-FCIAC.
Johnston shared with Neirad, "Yesterday was a one of a kind day. Across the board we ran amazingly. We had 6 girls in the top 30 and were able to place 3rd. It was a great showing and an even better source of motivation going into the state meet this Saturday. We've made it a long way but the best is yet to come!"
Another notable achievement is senior Sam Savage's first place medal in the JV race. She finished with a time of 16:01 and an average mile time of 6:31. The team has States this coming Saturday, the 25th, at Wickham Park in Manchester. We wish them the best of luck!
