Blue Wave Boys Basketball Preview

-By: Doug Phipps-

The Darien Blue Wave Boys Basketball team kicked off a new era on Friday. They played a six quarter scrimmage against Immaculate High School in Danbury. The format of the scrimmage had the score reset after each quarter, and the Wave split three out of the six quarters with Immaculate.
The Blue Wave retains seniors Chris Allam, Chris Stile, Charlie Kunze, and Ian Sullivan, with a new additional senior that is new to the program, Graham Hotchkiss. The Wave also keeps solid junior Geoff Leeker, to go with several other underclassmen. Darien has a new man at the helm this year as well, special-ed teacher Kyle Marian, who is known for being the tallest man to roam the hallways. In the October Neirad print edition, Mr. Marian said that it was his dream to coach the boys. He also played varsity basketball for the Blue Wave.
The past two years have not been kind to boys varsity. The boys have won just four games, with 37 losses. But with a new coach and a new roster the Wave is going to try to bring a big improvement upon the Darien basketball program.
Coach Tom O'Donnell led the Blue Wave to a 1-19 record in the last season. The team's lone win against Noble from Berwick, ME as the boys defeated the Knights 64-41. The Wave had no in-state victories.
Although Darien's 09-10 roster had four seniors, the majority of the roster was made up of underclassmen. The loss of seniors Phil Stueber, Mike Lee, Grant Scott, and Wes Blummer may deal a small blow to the program, but the underclassmen should be able to hold up the team.
Be sure to check out the boys’ first official game against Bassick of Bridgeport on Wednesday. (12/15)
