Masuk Brings Wave Football's Great Run to End

-By: Ben Hall-

The Blue Wave’s stellar season came to an end on Saturday (12/4) with a 41-0 loss against the powerhouse team in the state.

Coming off of a convincing quarterfinal victory against Wethersfield on Tuesday (11/30), the Blue Wave squared off against Masuk High School, the #1 ranked team in Connecticut.

On the first possession of the game, the Monroe-based team drove down the field and then scored on a run from the two-yard line. Masuk appeared to be on another touchdown scoring drive until the Darien defense forced a fumble, giving the offense a chance to even the score.

Darien failed to convert on a fourth down and Masuk returned the ball down the field and scored again, this time through the air, making the score 14-0. After two long gains by sophomore Peter Gesualdi leading Darien down to the one yard-line, senior Sean Fahey fumbled on his way to the end zone, again returning the momentum to Masuk.

The Monroe boys returned again to the end zone on a run by their quarterback putting Darien behind even further, 21-0. The Blue Wave again failed to convert on fourth down and just before the end of the half Masuk had a 40 yard screen pass that went for their fourth touchdown of the half, making the score at half time 28-0.

The second half was nearly a mirror image of the first, with Masuk’s defense never giving up much ground to the Wave offense, and dominating Darien both through the air and on the ground when Masuk was on offense. Masuk’s offense was relentless, and the Blue Wave had no chance of making a comeback, with its offense not being able to score, and their defense not having an answer for the Masuk offense.

After a long, tough game for the Blue Wave, Masuk came out victorious 41-0. Darien was just one game from the state championship this morning. But that proved to be the end against an extremely well prepared, powerful team. The amazing 2010 season and FCIAC championship are surely not to be forgotten.
