Girls Tennis Undefeated After Four Matches

By Amanda Sload
Girls Varsity Tennis opened the season with four consecutive away matches. Despite facing all host teams, they started strong with a 7-0 win over Farfield Warde on April 4th, followed by a 5-2 win over Wilton the next day. On the 9th, they lost no matches against Trumbull, winning 7-0, and beat Danbury 6-1 on the 10th.
Though the team lost six seniors to graduation, including the number one singles player and the number one doubles team, Darien has come out strong. Freshmen Pia Teschner, Erika Gill, Catherine Hatfield, and Claire Kelley have helped fill positions with talent. In fact, three of the four top spots have been filled with newcomers.
Despite all the freshmen, and only one senior, Abby Becker, and three juniors, the team has high hopes for the seaon. “I think our team is very good this year and we really have potential to win FCIACs and States,” junior Sarah Alptekin, one of the most senior players on the team, said.
Though they will face tough competition against rivals New Canaan and Greenwich, the team has been playing well thus far and hopes to stay that way. “Every court has a very good record so far and I think that will continue,” Alptekin said.
Come cheer on the girls at 4 p.m. today at home when they face Brien McMahon.
