Darien Soccer Edges Fairfield Warde 1-0

By Sam Hickey

On September 31 the Darien Blue Wave varsity soccer team took on Fairfield Warde at home. Following a strong 2-1 win over Norwalk, the Blue Wave looked to continue on a impressive run of form. However this game would not be so easy. Warde had control for the entire first half and the majority of the second half, but lacked the ability and composure to score. Darien had its chances, but also could not put anything in the back of the net. This set up a highly contentious finish with the score being 0-0 with only 5 minutes left to play. Then out of nowhere, after a moment of miscommunication in the Warde defense, Darien was awarded a free kick on the edge of the box. Senior Sean Gallagher was able to then bend the shot around the post and past the goalie to the astonishment of all. With this one goal lead with only seconds left Darien was able to steal a game from Fairfield Warde.

When asked how he thought his team played senior Casey Brown responded, “This was a strong performance for this team. We were able to keep ourselves in the game and put ourselves in a position to win late and that's exactly what we did”.
