Players Suspended From Turkey Bowl

Five varsity football players (three seniors, one junior, and one sophomore) have been suspended from playing in the Turkey Bowl on Thanksgiving Day. This action comes after several acts of vandalism with blue spray paint at New Canaan High School on Tuesday. (11/23) The Wave faces arch rival New Canaan in the annual holiday match-up. Darien is entering the game undefeated and as the FCIAC champ.

This is regretful, but it was the right thing to do to suspend the players. Winning is important, but not at the expense of our values as a community. I am not happy about losing, but I would have been even less happy to have five of our football players playing after breaking the law and vandalizing New Canaan. We can never tolerate this type of criminal conduct. We are running an educational institution, not a detention hall.

I just went to New Canaan High School to view the damage. What exactly were these kids thinking? It was not an innocent "prank" but well thought out property damage. Large Blue Darien "D"s were painted at the high school entrance as well as over the NC contributor bricks at Dunning Field. Addtional grafetti on the Dunning field sign as well as clock tower. EVERY school door knob was painted blue (with blue paint dripped all over the place). All in non-removable oil based paint.

I am embarrashed to have shown up at the game Thursday, and had I known this in advance I would not have. The boys have taken what was a feeling of pride for the community and made it something BAD. They have ruined the season for their team mates and coaches.

SHAME ON YOU! A 5 day suspension and being kicked off the team is mild punishment in my eyes.

They also might get arrested and are suspended for 10 days and will have to pay for clean up because the New Canaan school board is suing. I really doubt the kids also knew how difficult it would be to take off the paint.... they are get more than enough punishment since this was also follow them and hurt their chances of getting into college/getting a job in the future.

They also punished the entire team when they took those five kids out, not just the five kids. They were not at Darien High School so in all reality when the school can't help someone if they get bullied outside of school, they shouldn't be able to punish them if they damage something outside of school.

I wonder what excuses are being made for these five young men. They didn't realize how difficult the paint would be to remove? Really? An innocent prank, you know how kids are? Any preschooler would know better. I was so proud of the team and the coach after the big win. Now I feel sorry for the coaches and am ashamed the name of our town has to be associated with such unsportsmanship conduct. I would think it should affect their applications to college, etc. I also hope significant community service will be a consequence to help them appreciate the value of what was destroyed. Painting the community bricks was just creepy.
