Another Turkey Bowl, another disappointment for the DHS football team. The Blue Wave was trounced by New Canaan yet again yesterday in the most recent installment of the rivalry, which dates back all the way to 1928. The final score of the rout was 42-21 with Darien receiving scoring contributions from senior Harlan Smith (2 touchdown receptions) and junior Peter Gesualdi (1 touchdown reception).
New Canaan’s offense came out blazing, scoring on their first drive of the game to take an early lead. Darien would later tie the game in the second quarter on one of Smith’s touchdown catches but that is as close as they would get the rest of the game. New Canaan scored 21 unanswered points in the third quarter to take a 42-7 lead and Darien could not recover. The Rams’ offense, led by quarterback Matt Milano, was unstoppable and carried the team to a first-round state tournament game where they will play New London.
Junior Henry Baldwin led the Blue Wave both in passing and rushing yards, throwing for 251 yards and adding an additional 25 yards on the ground. Baldwin threw three touchdown passes on the day but was also intercepted four times.
Darien finished its season with a record of 8-2 but unfortunately will not qualify for the state tournament.
