Girls Basketball Gets 4th Win Over Central
By Jess DeMaio
The Darien Girls Basketball team dominated Bridgeport Central Friday night (1/6) with a 68-26 win at home. The team had strong offense in both halves of the game, and was already winning 38-15 when the halftime buzzer sounded. Freshman Daly Naughton was Darien’s biggest point contributor scoring 14 total points for the Blue Wave, but it was a true total team effort as almost everyone who got in the game scored. Junior Kate Bushell and sophomore Emily Stein each scored 12 points, freshman Lane Davis 8 points, sophomore Kelly Karczewski 5 points, senior captains Susan Biggart and Leslie Yuen four and three points respectively, freshman Avery Maley 4 points, and sophomore Phoebe Taylor and freshman Clare Naughton each with 2 apiece. Senior captain Amy Biggart played strong defense for the Blue Wave all game long, and helped hold Central to minimum shooting and only 26 points. Along with its overpowering offense, the Blue Wave’s capitalization of Central’s offensive errors combined with intense defense including several steals was what earned Darien the win. The win against Central gives the team a record of 4-3. Senior captain Susan Biggart said she thought the team played very well tonight and the game was “a great opportunity for our younger players to step up and get a chance to play.” The team’s next game will be in New Canaan on Tuesday (1/10) at 7pm. “Tonight was reminder that we can have a really strong season and we’re excited to show New Canaan that on Tuesday (1/10),” Biggart said. Over the holiday break Darien played New Canaan in an unofficial game and lost by only three points, so Tuesday’s (1/10) game is sure to be a good one to catch.
