The Darien
High School Squash Team took the court against some of the best public school teams
in the area during the Fairwest Jamboree on December 11. Held at Yale, the
event is considered the most important match of the season, except for High
School Nationals. The competition is also perceived as a crucial determinant of
team strength and reputation. Says varsity captain Kincade Webster, “Fairwest
is a great tournament, as it is an only public school tournament, and allows us
to gauge how well we are performing…I look at Fairwest as a prep for
Nationals.”
The first opponent for the
varsity squad was a resolute Rye team that would take five individual matches
to Darien’s two, with Jonathan Gill and Dominick Hansford emerging as the only
victorious Wave players. Fortunately, Darien fared much better in the second
match, going six and one against Fairfield Ludlowe. While the Wave went one and
one at the varsity level, in stark contrast to undefeated performances in the
last several years, Webster remains unbowed, “We performed decently, but in no
way was it our best… [however] the season is progressing nicely.” Moreover,
Webster was enthused with the team’s progress since the beginning of the year
and preparation for nationals, saying, “The team is improving quickly… The goal
is to stay focused in order to compete at our best at Nationals, and remain the
#1 public school in the nation.”
Upcoming contests for the team
include private school invite matches, the most notable of which will be held
at Brunswick in January.
