The Darien Blue Wave took on the feisty Greenwich Cardinals
on Tuesday May 7th at the Darien High School stadium. Greenwich
proudly displayed their “Play for Pink” shirts in place of their red jerseys,
as Darien wore neon pink socks and bows.
The game was definitely a tense one as both teams had
players who play in the off-season on the CT Chargers team. The opponents knew
each other’s strengths and weaknesses, and the ending to the game was unclear
as the halftime whistle blew. Darien was losing at halftime 6-7 due to a slow
start, but picked up the pace and won the game 17-9.
“We wanted to win this game more than Greenwich, and we knew
that at halftime we would have to turn it around and be more aggressive. It was
a good test for us, and definitely helps us prepare for FCIACS," said senior
captain Kristy Gilbert.
The Darien Girls Lax team is currently 12-1, with a tough
loss in overtime on April 6th to Garden City. However, since Garden City is in
New York, the Blue Wave is currently 10-0 in the FCIAC and the only undefeated
team at the top of the league. Darien is also number 6 in the Laxpower national
high school girls poll. This game marked the 325th win by Coach Lisa
Lindley. The team celebrated with a cake after the game, and the sweet taste of
victory.
The next Darien Girls Lacrosse game will be their Senior Day
on Friday May 9th versus Fairfield Warde.
