Wave Girls Lax Takes Home the FCIAC Trophy!

By Cammie Lattimer

The Girls Lacrosse Team took on New Canaan on Friday (5/24) at Brien McMahon High School. The stakes were high as these two rivals battled it out for the Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference (FCIAC) title.

Darien High School Girls Lacrosse Team was 16-0 and undefeated in the FCIAC, only having lost one game to Garden City, NY, crowning them the winners of the FCIAC Eastern Division. The championship game on Friday determined whether they would be the winners of the entire FCIAC tournament.

The New Canaan Girls Lacrosse Team was 10-1 in the FCIAC and 15-1 overall entering the game.

The weather was unpredictable as it fluctuated from a light drizzle to a downpour with strong winds. However, the dedicated fans simply opened the umbrellas and kept on cheering. Both teams never let up as the score went back and forth throughout the game.

“We had to dig deep and fight for the game. We knew we had to come out stronger in the second half. It really came down to us giving everything we had, and overcoming being down two goals at the halftime. In the end, when they tied it up with a couple minutes left, we fought even harder to go ahead and keep a lead. It was a whole team effort and it feels amazing to beat New Canaan in the finals,” said senior captain Kristy Gilbert.

The rivalry was apparent, as this would be the last time the seniors on each team would play each other in the high school season (Darien and New Canaan are in different State Tournament Divisions).

But the Blue Wave was as strong as ever, as Darien pulled through with the win. It was clear that the DHS Girls Lax Team wanted it more as they outsprinted, out-passed, and out-cheered New Canaan. The final score of the game was 12-10.

CONGRATS TO WAVE GIRLS LAX!!!

The next Girls Lacrosse game is on Tuesday, May 28th at the DHS Stadium Turf at 5pm. It will be the first game of the State Tournament.
