After a big win against Danbury on
Wednesday, Darien high School only needed one more win to be .500 for the
regular season. This game was bound to be easy because of the weak opponent,
Harding Bridgeport. On the mound was senior, Matt Morr. Morr, who usually
relieves, was about to make his first varsity start. So how would he do against
Harding?
Morr started out well, not allowing
a hit in the first 2 innings. The offense got off hot very quickly, scoring 2
runs in the 1st inning. That’s all Matty Mo. (Matt Morr) needed in
the game, pitching 5 scoreless innings, striking out 1 batter. Even though the
lineup was filled with benched players, the offense was very aggressive, scoring
10 runs, in 4 innings. With the help of terrible defense by Harding, and committing
9 errors, (5 wild pitches), DHS had a 13-0 lead in the top of the 6th.
In the top of the 6th, Neirad’s very own, Matt Brown, came in to
pitch. Brown hadn’t pitched in 2 weeks, and pitched a JV game on Monday. He
went 2 innings, allowed 1 run, and struck out a better. DHS won 13-1! Morr was
very happy on how he pitched.
“I felt good, against a team like
this you expect to do that well but you can’t take anything for granted. You
just come and win. I mainly threw fastballs, didn’t throw much curveballs” –
Morr Said
This was only the 2nd
time Matt Brown got to pitch in the varsity level, but he doesn’t expect to
pitch more.
“No I really don’t, Liam (senior
Liam Naughton) is a great pitcher, Nault (junior Andrew Nault) is a great
pitcher, Mackenzie (senior Mackenzie Glavin) is a great pitcher, Matty Mo (senior
Matt Morr) is a great pitcher, so I think they got it right, they know what
they’re doing. Matty Mo did great, pounded the zone, got outs, pitched a
shutout that I blew for him, but overall he did very well,” Brown said.
Overall, Coach Scott was very
impressed on his team.
“It was a game that we had to come
out and win; that was it. Against a team like that, we knew we outmatched them,
so just come and get the win,” Scott said.
DHS is now 7-7 in the regular
season, which is 1 win away from tying, last year’s record. On Monday, DHS is
off to play against Brien McMahon. On the mound will be the ace, senior
Mackenzie Glavin. If DHS keeps playing the way they are playing, look for them
to make states and FCIACs.
