Baseball: Darien Loses a Tough One

By Ahmed Mustafa

After beating Trinity Catholic on Friday, Darien High School was ready for another big game of baseball on April 29th.It was going to be a big game for DHS, playing a very tough team, Staples. On the mound was the ace of the staff, Senor Mackenzie Glavin. Glavin has been unlucky lately, going 0-3 in his last 3 starts, due to the lack of offense and defense. So how would DHS do in their first home game back?
Glavin looked good in the 1st inning, striking out 2 batters to start the game, but then Staples got on him quickly. In the top of the 2nd inning, Staples scored a run, giving them an early 1-0 lead. In the top of the 4th inning, Glavin was one strike away from getting out of the inning, but he gave up the hit, giving staples a 2-0 lead. Staples started a rally, scoring another 2 runs, giving them a 4-0 lead. In the top of the 5th, an error by 1B Senor Liam Naughton cost another run, giving them a 5-0 lead... DHS offense was very quiet throughout the game, but scored a run in the top of the 7th inning. DHS hit a lot of balls hard, but for some reason couldn’t drop in for hits. DHS lost 5-1.
One of the bright spots of this game was captain Senior Andrew Maley, playing his first game back from his ankle injury with 2 hits.

"We played pretty well; we just couldn’t find any of the holes. I was the only one who could find the holes with my 2 hits, but we had some hard hits with some guys on base. (Coach Scott) said this happens sometimes, this game can suck sometimes and it’s good with others, and on this side it sucks, but it happens. But one thing we can take from this is we can hit so hopefully if we hit like this on Wednesday, we have a great chance of winning on Wednesday,” Maley said.

Sophomore George Reed was very upset with today’s game. “I hit the ball hard twice at one of the best outfielders in the freaking league, so that what happens sometimes. If I played Danbury or Wilton or something, I would’ve had 3 doubles, so it happens, " said Reed.

Glavin couldn’t finish the inning, so Ames Murray came in and ate up some innings. Overall, Glavin went 4 2/3, 5 runs (4 earned), striking out 5 batters wiht 96 pitches.

“Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, and sometimes it rains. Today Rained. I felt good throughout the game, threw 96 pitches, which is a little high, but I felt good," Glavin said

Junior Ames Murray, who usually starts, came in for relief, pitching 2 1/3 scoreless innings.
“We hit the ball well they just didn’t fall, it’s a weird game, hopefully karma comes back and the balls will drop and it will go our way," said Murray.

Coach Scott was displeased with the loss, but has total confidence in his players.“We certainly had chances that we weren’t able to capitalize on, It’s not about our guys at the plate, we hit a lot of balls hard, you won’t see that on the scoreboard, but we hit the ball well, their outfielders made some good players, so that’s what happens sometimes in this game," Scott said

Now, DHS is 5-7 in the regular season. However, this season is still under control. On Wednesday in Darien, a big game against Danbury could change everything.
