On January 10, 2014, the Darien Boys Basketball team took on
Brien McMahon and won 64-60, extending their win streak to four games.
Darien was hot right from the start. Senior Chima Azuonwu won the tip, senior
George Phillips received the ball, and quickly passed it to senior captain Matt
Staubi for a layup. Soon thereafter, Darien
was up 12-2 and the crowd was going crazy.
McMahon came back, making it a close game, and it remained that way
throughout the game.
The Blue Wave played mostly an odd type of zone but it was
effective since they rotated and communicated well. The Senators played mostly man defense and
showed some 3-2 zone.
Staubi, who had 24 points and 13 assists, once again led
Darien. He had help from Azuonwu (10
points, 9 rebounds), Phillips (13 points), senior captain Bobby Fitzpatrick (11
points), and senior captain Ames Murray (13 rebounds). Last year the team seemed to be a one-man
show but this year it is different. Even
though Staubi is still leading them in play, he is getting much better
support. “We have been working really
hard ever since the summer, playing together and gaining good chemistry to the
point that we are like a family. We
really trust each other and we know that we can all play, so there has been a
much better balance of scoring,” said Staubi.
Although Darien has been playing well they are not
satisfied. “A four game winning streak
is nice but we want to keep building off it and win more games. We are never satisfied and we are hungry,”
said Staubi.
Make sure to catch the next basketball game on Tuesday the
21st of January as they take on Trinity Catholic at home.
