On Tuesday, January 14, Darien’s Girls Varsity Basketball
team went up against Trumbull in a game that started slow but wound up being a
tight match.
Darien’s Avery Maley put away the first two points for Darien
almost a minute and a half into the first quarter. Trumbull followed with a
free throw shortly thereafter, and then a three pointer later on, putting the
Eagles in the lead at 4-3. Sophomore Kate Fiore, taking two free throws and
making both, brought Darien back up, with a score of 5-4.
Darien and Trumbull exchanged the lead throughout the second
quarter. Great defense by Fiore prevented what would have been an uninterrupted
Trumbull drive. Trumbull then managed a three pointer, tying the game at 13-13.
The Trumbull coach, who became visibly animated as the tie
went on, did not have his mood improved when Darien sunk a three pointer,
followed by a layup, bringing the score to 18-13. Emily Stein followed that up
with two more free throws, making the halftime score 20-13.
Both teams started racking up points throughout the second
half, but by the fourth quarter, Darien had a substantial lead, at 40-33. Two
Trumbull drives brought the score up to 40-37, and then a Darien free throw and
a Trumbull three pointer saw the game at a tight 41-40. Stein gave Darien some
breathing room with a layup. Two more free throws by Darien gave the team a
45-40 lead. One last free throw by Kelly Karczewski was icing on the cake of
victory for Darien, who took home the win with a final score of 46-40.
