On Monday, September 23, Darien Boys Basketball faced Stamford Academy in a fall exhibition game. Darien won 45-42 in a close game that went down to the wire. Darien had an up-and-down game but stayed poised and closed out the game successfully. Senior captain Matt Staubi led the Blue Wave in scoring with 20 points.
Darien got off to a quick start, winning the opening tip and scoring on its first possession with a layup by Staubi. Both teams were playing a 2-3 zone defense making it hard for the other team to penetrate and get buckets in the painted area. In the first half Staubi was scoring most of the points for the Blue Wave and the Wave played solid defense. After 12 minutes of play Darien and Stamford Academy were tied heading into half time. In the second half both teams were executing better in the half court. Staubi led Darien while Stamford Academy was being led by its two guards. When asked what the mindset was for Darien with a minute left Staubi said, “They were going to foul so we needed to run the clock out as much as we can and wait for either a wide open shot or a layup. While I got pushed in the back on my layup Bobby was there to clean it up and then defensively we just needed to contest everything, talk, and box out. We stayed poised and were able to do those things and that’s a big step for this team.”
