Darien Varsity Field Hockey Beats 2nd Team in Nation

By Erinn Ravosa

Last Thursday, August 29th, the Girls Varsity Field Hockey team played Oak Knoll in a home scrimmage. Oak Knoll is a team from NJ, most commonly known for being nationally ranked 2nd. A game which looked like a loss at halftime turned into a win for the Wave.

Oak Knoll started off strong, scoring two goals in the first 15 minutes of the scrimmage. The Wave was unable to score any goals in the first half. In the second half, sophmore Georgia Cassidy put the Wave on scoreboard with a shot to right corner of the goal. Following her first goal, Cassidy scored another when she tipped senior Kelsey Bumgardner’s shot, which resulted in a tie game.

At this point in the game, the Darien girls stepped up their game, each player hungry for a win. The ball entered the Darien offensive circle with 5 minutes left on the clock. The Oak Knoll goalie dove onto the turf to save a shot by the Wave. Senior Cassidy Stauffer got the rebound and took a shot at the empty goal. To the Wave’s surprise, an Oak Knoll field player lunged in front of the ball and illegally deflected it before it could cross the goal-line. Due to the illegal move, the Darien girls were granted a stroke. Senior Hollis Perticone was chosen to take the shot. She flicked the ball over the goalie’s head, scoring the third goal for the team. Oak Knoll was unable to score another goal in the remaining minutes of the scrimmage, leaving Darien with the win.

After the scrimmage, sophmore Georgia Cassidy said, “Even though Oak Knoll was a tough team with a good reputation, we were able to connect very well [as a team] by the second half and come away with a win.” The scrimmage was great way to start off the team’s preseason.
