Blue Wave Soccer Ties Fairfield Warde

By Chris Rehm

On Monday (9/23) the Blue Wave soccer team faced off against Fairfield Warde Mustangs. The game took place in Fairfield at 4:30 pm. Both teams played incredible defense to start the game which lead to a scoreless first half. Sophomore goalie Liam Rischmann was stellar in net, saving everything that came at him and directing the field beautifully. Coming out of the locker room to start the second half, the team was fired up to try and get their first win of the season after a great speech by senior captain Graham Helgans. This speech proved to be successful as the team quickly went up 1-0 after a spectacular penalty kick from junior Kai Bjornstad. The Blue Wave’s defense remained solid as the game progressed and it looked like the team’s record would improve to 1-4 on the season. But, with seven minutes left in the game, a Fairfield forward used some nifty footwork to get past the Wave’s defense and put one past Rischmann into the back of the net to tie the game at 1-1. The game ended in a tie and the Blue Wave’s record is now 0-4-1.

After the game, senior Aidan Brannigan said, “We were really hoping to win this one and get our first win of the season,  so the tie is disappointing, but we showed some great things today and some things we can definitely build from.”  Come support the Blue Wave as they attempt to get their first win of the season this Friday against St. Joe’s at 4 pm on the DHS turf field.
