The Darien High School Girls Swimming and Diving Team kept busy over Labor Day weekend by traveling to Cape May, NJ for its annual training trip. This Labor Day trip has been a tradition the team has carried on for 4 years now. The team departed at 6 am Saturday morning and spent the weekend at teammate Maggie Orem’s vacation home. The girls’ days in Cape May consisted of strenuous physical activities including a daily 3 mile run on the boardwalk, open water swim, and a 4-8 mile bike ride to the Cape May lighthouse where the team ran up and down the 199 narrow steps each day. Although most of their activities involved sweat and stamina, the team still had some leisure time. Senior captain, Amanda Bieler, said, “We get to have some fun after all of the exercise we do like go to the beach and have a barbeque”. Senior Sam Schrenker also added, “This trip was a great way to get to know the freshman and bond as a team. We created a certain team dynamic that will set the tone for the rest of our season!” The team was accompanied by its head coach, Marj Trifone, who participated in all the team activities and bonded with the girls.
