The Darien Girls Varsity Field
Hockey team finished its season with great records of a total of 15 wins, 1 tie
and 1out-of-state loss. In state, the team was undefeated. Despite this
impressive record, the team still had to work for its win this past Saturday,
November 16th. The team played their final game against Cheshire High
School in the state finals. The Girls Field Hockey defeated Cheshire in an intense
game leaving the scoreboard 3-1.
In the first half, Cheshire got on
the scoreboard with a goal off of a corner. So, the score was 1-0, Cheshire. Astonishingly,
the Wave gained momentum after the goal was scored against them.
In the second
half, the team came out on fire. The players’ hard work paid off when senior
Hollis Perticone was granted two penalty strokes.
The
first stroke by Perticone was made with 18 minutes left on the clock. It whizzed
over the Cheshire goalie’s head and into the left corner of the goal. The
second stroke was also lifted over the goalie’s head, except this time it went to
right. The scoreboard was now 2-1, putting Wave in the lead.
With
just 1 minute left in the game, the Wave was able to score another goal. This
made the final score 3-1.
Blue
Wave’s goalie Senior Danika Hornick played an outstanding game, making a total
of nine saves. Hornick is commended for being the “best goalie in the state”,
according to the Darien Times!
Although
the season is over, the girls should still be celebrating after their amazing
season. Their win is definitely something to be proud over.
