On Saturday (11/9), the Darien Blue Wave football team
traveled to Warren Harding High School in hopes of clinching a fifth straight
win. The Blue Wave didn't start out strong against the Presidents but soon got
back on track and secured a 47-23 win.
Senior Nick Lombardo tears through the Harding defense |
Due
to a Darien fumble on Harding's one yard line and a 91-yard pick six, the
Presidents were up 7-0 with eight minutes left in the first quarter. Darien was
quick to respond and junior Peter Archey drove one in to put six points up for
the Darien offense (the PAT was no good). The first quarter ended with the
score remaining 7-6.
Within
the first four seconds of the second quarter, senior Myles Ridder ran for 20
yards into the end zone. Senior Kyle Gifford ran the ball in for the 2-point conversion
that put Darien up over Harding 14-7. With 7:14 left in the half, senior kicker
Daly Hebert kicked a 27-yard field goal, tacking on 3 points for the Blue Wave.
To end the first half, senior Silas Wyper connected with junior Griffin Ross
for a 1 yard TD reception. The PAT was good and the first half ended with
Darien up 24-7.
The
second half of play was much of the same in the first half, and senior Nick
Lombardo ran one in within the first 30 seconds of play to add another 6 points
to the board. Darien forced a Harding safety and another two points were given
to the Blue Wave. Darien scored again, ending the third quarter with a 40-7
Darien lead.
Harding
scored for the second time in the game at the start of the first quarter and
scored again with a few minutes left to play. The fourth quarter ended, and
Darien was awarded with another win, and left one step closer to the big New
Canaan rivalry game on Thanksgiving morning. Darien plays North Haven this
Friday (11/15) at North Haven.
