On Friday November 1st,
the Darien Girls Cross Country team ventured back to Wickham Park in East
Hartford to compete in State Opens. The meet was delayed to a 4:15 start
because of heavy rain, but thankfully, the course remained dry and safe to run
on.
Top runner Anne Johnston led the Varsity 7, finishing in 10th place overall, with a personal best time of 19:46. Amanda Percarpio placed 2nd for Darien, followed by Alex Ford, Grace Evanich, Lindsey Holek, Kate Halabi, and Erika Osherow. As a team, Darien placed 17th in the open meet, but Johnston secured a spot of her own for the New England Championship race in New Hampshire on Saturday.

“I’m definitely a little nervous
going into this weekend because the state open meet was a lot faster this year,
and New Englands is going to be very competitive,” she said. Johnston, who
hasn’t run the New Hampshire course, said that she will put her best into the
race, and use her strong performance from this past weekend to propel her
forward. “I am looking forward to the race, and seeing how the boys’ team
does.”
