On Thursday, April 17th, the Darien High School Baseball team ended up losing to the Fairfield Warde Mustangs 7-5 after playing a hard-fought game in borderline-freezing weather.
Senior Andrew Nault started on the mound for the Blue Wave, but was taken out of the game after 3 innings, mainly due to solid Fairfield Warde baserunning that resulted from a few Darien errors. Juniors Conor Davey (1 inning) and Jake Frasca (2 innings) came in in relief, and, for the most part, stifled the opponent.
The Mustangs took an early 5-0 lead during Nault's time on the mound, but key hits from DHS juniors George Reed (third base) and Mikey Maccarone (center field), as well as senior Brendan Donohue (second base), brought the Blue Wave back into striking distance. These hits definitely fired up the "bench crew", and senior Ames Murray and junior TJ Adiletta led the rowdy Blue Wave squad in numerous cheers. However, more fielding errors for Darien in the later innings allowed Warde to get two more runs and keep DHS at bay. In the end, that deficit was too big to overcome, and the final score was 7-5.
Regarding the team's performance, junior outfielder Mike O'Malley said, "Obviously it wasn't the result we'd hoped for, but it showed that we could come back when we're down late in a game and string together some runs. We needed to tighten up some defensive stuff, but I'm confident we will come back strong for our game against Norwich."
Come check out Darien's next game at Dodd Stadium in Norwich, CT (home of the Detroit Tigers' A minor-league affiliate) on Saturday, April 19th, at noon.
