Blue Wave Baseball Comes Back to Beat Trumbull

by Stephen Barston

On Wednesday, April 23rd, the Blue Wave Varsity Baseball team traveled up to Trumbull for a tough FCIAC away game against the Trumbull Eagles, perennial powerhouses on the Connecticut baseball scene.

Senior Ames "Specs" Murray started on the mound for Darien High School, but was taken out after 3 and 1/3 innings, a span in which the opposing Trumbull squad, mainly thanks to the swirling winds and cold temperature, took a 7-3 lead. However, the game was far from over.

Darien showed impressive resilience, with players all throughout the lineup stringing together key hits late in the game. Junior Michael Maccarone had a clutch two-RBI single, and senior captain Brendan Donohue had three RBIs on three hits over the course of the game. Such incredible batting ultimately allowed the Blue Wave to take a 9-7 lead.

Donohue was also exceptional on the mound, pitching 3 and 2/3 innings in relief without allowing a single run. He also struck out three batters (and did not walk anyone), maintaining the aforementioned lead and ensuring a crucial victory for DHS. With the win, Darien improved to 6-1 overall.

Regarding the performance, Donohue said, "I thought everyone played really well. We got unlucky early on but we fought back with the bats and played tough defense, and came out on top. Everyone contributed."

Come check out Blue Wave Baseball in action against Warren Harding High School on Friday, April 25th at 4 PM.
