The Blue Wave Boys Soccer team took on
Westhill last Thursday to open at home, pulling off a solid 2-0 victory. Darien started the game with great possession
and a few scoring opportunities, however the game stayed scoreless for most of
the half. Leading the defense was senior
captain John Mackie, who caused multiple turnovers and helped maintain
possession. Protecting the goal was
junior Liam Rischmann who had two spectacular diving saves. With about two
minutes left in the half, junior forward Kevin Klarer scored a close range
strike assisted by senior Michael Maccarone with a cross from the wing.
The team was able to maintain its lead
into the second half. In the 55th
minute, the Westhill goalie was ejected from the game for kicking Klarer in the
face. He suffered a head injury and had to be walked off the field. Shortly after, senior captain Henrik
Stockinger secured the win with a great finesse shot while one-on-one with the backup
Westhill goalie. Wave played out the
rest of the game a man up, maintaining the lead to beat Westhill.
When asked about the game, senior left
back Johann Nottebohm said, “It was a great game. The team played really well. Now wave are looking forward to the next week
and hoping Kevin a quick recovery.”
Wave will be taking on Harding this
Tuesday away, and are looking for another win to secure qualifying for states
at the end of the season.
