Wave Football Washes
Away Hillhouse
By Britton Barthold
The Darien High School
football team opened its’ season in New Haven with a 47-25 route over
Hillhouse. Darien went into the game as heavy favorites in the FCIAC and in the
State, but struggled early on against an emotionally motivated Hillhouse team,
losing the first half 18-14.
After a quick awakening,
the Blue Wave fought back and scored 33 points in the second half to grab a big
early season win. Junior QB Timmy Graham was near perfect in his debut,
throwing for 204 yards with 3 touchdowns. Senior WR Todd Herget complimented
Grahams passing by hauling in 3 catches for 73 yards and a TD, while senior RB
Peter Archey pounded his way to a 8.6 yards a carry average and 2 TDs on the
night. On the defensive side of things, junior DE Mark Evanchick picked up
where he left off from last year by grabbing 5 solo tackles along with 2 sacks.
To end things off, junior DB Tyler Grant took a pick-six 99 yards on the last
play of the game to put a stamp on a huge victory.
The Blue Wave faces a
tough schedule ahead however, taking on Greenwich up at Cardinal Stadium Friday
under the lights against a very hostile crowd, followed by big games such as
St. Joes, Fairfield Warde, North Haven and of course, the ones from up North.
