This past Saturday, September 13th,
2014, The Blue Wave JV Field Hockey team took on Lakeland, pulling off a solid
but close 3-1 victory. With Lakeland always providing fierce opposition to Blue
Wave Field Hockey (Varsity lost 0-2 just minutes before the start of the JV
game) the game was exciting to watch and unpredictable to the last minute,
despite the continuous rain.
Both teams constantly found holes
in their opponents defenses and made breakaway runs down the center, only to be
thwarted by a fast-acting goalie or sweeper at the last minute. Lakeland did
score on on a breakaway right before the half, but couldn’t quite keep up with
The Wave.
The teams were tied at the half,
but the game quickly turned in the wave’s favor when sophomore Lizzy Bothwell
scored five minutes into the second half.
The wave also had the advantage of
the support of several varsity level sophomores who played for JV during the
game, including Campbell Matheis and Meaghan Waldron.
Sophomore Mariana Seibold reflected
on the game, saying “The entire team really worked well together, and it was
such a team effort. I can’t really pick out a key player, but I would compliment
the effort of the midfield and defense players. They never get the credit!”
Come cheer on JV Field Hockey at
their next home game on Friday, 9/19 at 5:30 as they take on Stamford.
JV players watch intently as Darien defends against Lakeland.
