DHS RFC Falls to New Rochelle

-By: Daniel Campbell-

Despite a quick start, the DHS rugby team ultimately fell 36-26 to New Rochelle High School from New Rochelle, NY in its first official MetNYUnion match of the year. The game took place at Royle Elementary School on Thursday. (4/8) Darien opened the scoring with a try by junior James Shanley early in the first half. The remainder of the half the score remained constant, but only with the help of a few try line stops by Darien. Finally, senior captain Connor McCarthy grabbed the ball off the ground and sprinted almost the length of the field before passing to junior Will Weinstock for the score. New Rochelle received a penalty to end the half 14-3 in Darien’s favor. The opposition came back stronger in the second half, scoring quickly twice to take the lead. McCarthy scored a try to regain the lead, but from there “New Ro” continued to score and went on to win despite a last-minute try by sophomore Brian Love. Despite the loss, the team remained upbeat. “We played a good game of rugby,” junior Sam McCarthy said. Several New Rochelle players also praised the Darien team’s speed and agility. The boys are hoping for a better result at the next match Saturday (4/24) at 4pm against Delbarton High School from Morris Township, N.J.
