Boys Indoor Track Places at State Opens

by Lindsey Holek

On Monday, February 17th, the Darien Boys Indoor Track Team headed to the Floyd Little Athletic Center at Hillhouse High School in New Haven, CT to compete in State Opens.  The meet was postponed from Saturday due to snow, yet the delay did not hold the boys back from a successful meet.

The meet started off very well, with the 4x800m relay team, consisting of seniors James Farrington, Jack Sparkman, Marshall Huffman, and junior Alex Ostberg, placing 5th in the second event with a time of 8:16.74.

Following the successful relay, sophomore Army Noonan raced the 1600m, placing 5th and scoring points for the team with a time of 4:28.22.

In the 3200m, Ostberg returned for an amazing race, placing second with 9:10.30 and scoring the team 9 points. Huffman also ran well, placing 10th with a time of 9:52.75.

The Darien boys dominated in the field events, with seniors Nick Lombardo and Spencer McKeough in the high jump and shot-put, respectively.  Lombardo won the high jump with a height of 6’ 8” and McKeough placed 9th in shot put with a distance of 47’ 04”.

Overall, the boys placed 4th with a total of 22 points, and were very satisfied with their performances.  “I’m really proud of the team and I couldn’t be happier with the success we’ve had this season.  It’s a great feeling to run with these guys,” Noonan said.

In a few weeks, Lombardo, Ostberg, Noonan, and the entire 4x800 relay team will be headed to the Reggie Lewis Center in Boston, MA for New England’s, after qualifying at State Opens.  “We’re all really excited and pumped to represent Darien at such a competitive meet,” Noonan added.  The boys, along with distance coach Tyson Kaczmarek, will be training hard for the next few days leading up to New England’s.

Best of luck to the boys heading up to Boston in a few weeks for New England’s, and congratulations to those boys who finished with such a successful season.
