Darien Varsity Field Hockey Falls to Lakeland 0-2

By Mary Brown
On Saturday, September 13th, the Blue Wave took on Lakeland High School amidst the pouring rain in what turned out to be a battle between the two teams until the very last minute. Lakeland is always a tough competition for the Wave, making for a very exciting and spirited game year after year. “Starting off the game knowing how high the competition was made the team hungrier to win,” said senior Kyra Fitzpatrick. As seen by their immense efforts on the field, there is certainly no doubt that the Wave was eager to come home with a win.
Fitzpatrick played an exceptional game, truly holding down the defensive end. She made countless block tackles to get the ball out of Darien’s defensive circle and definitely did not make it easy for Lakeland to take shots on goal.
In addition to Fitzpatrick, junior Kaeleigh Morrill played a great game as Darien’s goalie and contributed to the fantastic defensive efforts. With the high pressure and pure talent of the Lakeland players, limiting them to only two goals should be nothing less than a great triumph for Morrill.
In the midfield, sophomore Gabby Noto worked hard to move the ball up the field and used her strength and power to get shots on goal. Juniors Marissa Baker and Georgia Cassidy worked their duo magic in the offensive end to give Lakeland’s defense a run for their money.
Although the Wave did not walk off the field with a win, their performance on Saturday proved just how far this team could go. “We played hard the entire game and worked together to prove how much potential we have. If we play with that same intensity in games to come, we will definitely go far,” said Fitzpatrick.
