Blue Wave Football Joins “Wreaths Across America

by Ryan Barthold

Over 30 former, future, and current members of the Darien Blue Wave Football Team participated in “Wreaths Across America” on Saturday (12/10) at the Spring Grove Cemetery. The team, along with many members of the community including the Veterans of Foreign Wars and Darien First Selectman Jayme Stevenson, helped distribute 500 wreaths to the graves of veterans. At the head of the wreath-laying ceremony was VFW Commander Phil Kraft, who noted that the ceremony directly coincided with the ceremony being held at Arlington National Cemetery. Prior to the event, 2011 captains Corey Eppley, Patrick McDonald, Mike Stovall, and Brett O’Donnell and 2012 captains Henry Baldwin, Ian Vanderhorn, Matty D’Andrea, and Andrew Maley helped bring the wreaths to the cemetery and prepare them for distribution. The team and the community were able to distribute 500 wreaths in less than 10 minutes, bringing a little holiday cheer to the graves of the fallen.
