Support our Track Runners at the Raindeer Relays

by Katrina Vassell

As the new track season commences, Junior Claire Walker urges the DHS community to support our winter track runners at this weekend’s Reindeer Relays. The meet will take place this Saturday (12/17) at Wilton High School. While the runners’ bus leaves early in the morning, spectators are encouraged to come at 9 am to support our athletes. “I hope that people come to cheer us on because usually people only watch sports like volleyball or football. People don’t really get how hard we work,” said Walker. Claire went on to describe the rigorous workouts of a track athlete in preparation for the season. Each school day, the runners jog 4 to 5 miles with the team and are also expected to run independently. On Tuesdays, the runners take part in a sprinting workout which consists of sprints. In total, our schools indoor track athletes run from 20- 50 miles a week.  While the runners cannot qualify for FSIACS at the Reindeer Relays, the race is an important way to boost the morale of the athletes and raise blue wave spirit for another successful year.
