Winter Olympics 2014 inside Look: Free Style Skiing

By Ashley Mailhot

This February 23rd, the 2014 Winter Olympics games are taking place in Sochi, Russia. Many sports will be played at this upcoming event, but one of the most fascinating sports will be freestyle skiing. This event allows the Olympians to use their creative skills in order to claim a medal.

Freestyle skiing requires two disciplines– aerials and moguls. The aerial event is considered the most breathtaking freestyle discipline; Olympians start off at a spot of their choice, and then ski down a mountain toward a concave jump, which can reach the heights of 13 feet. The Olympians complete a variety of somersaults and twists and then make an effort to stick the landing. The skiers that get the highest scores in the first round are granted the privilege of moving into the next round, in which the competitors are required to ski off of the jump twice. In the mogul event, the Olympians ski around large bumps on the mountain, measuring up to about 4 feet high. The USA currently holds the most medals for this sport than any other country. Hopefully we can hold this record in 2014!
