For only the second time in Darien history, the boy’s cross country team has gotten to take home the coveted 1st place plaque for the States Class L championship at Wickham Park. The team won with 46 points (putting 5 runners in the top 15 finishers), followed by Naugatuck with 86 points, and Pomperaug with 147 points. Finishing first for Darien was senior captain Michael Johnston with a time of 16:44 (5th place), followed closely by senior captain Charlie Baird with a time of 16:50 (6th place) and senior captain Michael Coe with a time of 16:55 (8th place). All three runners earned the All State title, the first time in coach Tyson Kaczmarek’s career that this has occurred. Charlie Baird and Michael Johnston also earned the distinction of being the only two runners in DHS history to win two state titles. Rounding out the Darien finishers were sophomore Marshall Huffman with a time of 17:07 (12th place), freshman Alex Ostberg with a time of 17:16 (15th place), freshman Peter Kreuch with a time of 17:43 (31st place), and senior captain Eli Converse with a time of 17:58 (45th place). The team managed to avoid the harsh weather that derailed some of the races later in the day, although the Class L championship was run on an alternate course that was more road-heavy than the typical Wickham 5k. The team will run at State Opens on Friday, (11/4) for a chance to qualify for New Englands.
