Bunnell ends Darien Girls’ Soccer Improbable Run

-By: Ian Sullivan-

Bunnell of Stratford was too much for the DHS girls’ soccer team on Saturday (11/13) who ended Daren’s run in the CIAC Class L state tournament. The Wave lost in penalty kicks with a score of 2-1. The game started off with an early Blue Wave lead when senior captain Georgie Highton scored the first goal. With a lead at half, the Wave couldn’t stop the dynamic Bulldogs' offense, which scored in the last nine minutes. Stratford forced a shootout, which ended in a 1-0 victory for Bunnell. “We were dominating for the whole game, until the penalty kicks. It was really frustrating losing in a shootout,” senior Lisa Randall said. While the Wave came up short, the girls had an unexpectedly successful season, finishing with an 11-6-2 record.

Although we played a great game, I have to say that Bunnell was a force to be reckoned with. I have to disagree that we dominated the whole game, but we did show well. I was also disappointed in our coach's seemingly negative remarks about the host team. The played a great match and never gave up. This view might be tainted by the poor sportsmanship he demonstrated at the game when he threw his gum (or whatver he was chewing on) into the bleachers by the Bunnell fans.
As we left the field, numerous Bunnell parents and players congratulated our girls on the excellent game they played- too bad we couldn't match their sportsmanship.
Good Job Blue Wave!!!!!
