Girls’ Basketball Takes Down Bassick in Home Opener

By Jessica DeMaio
Girls’ basketball opened its home season at DHS with a crushing 65-12 victory over Bassick High School on Wednesday night (12/15) to improve its record to 3-0. Sophomore Meg Marren led the Blue Wave on offense, scoring over 25 points. Senior captain Nicole Buch remained solid at point guard scoring 10 points, and junior Leslie Yuen started and saw a sufficient amount of playing time while also putting points on the board for the Wave. Freshman standout Emily Stein started and contributed to both aspects of the Wave’s game by adding points to the board as well as being an aggressive rebounder. Sophomores Kate Bushell and Meg Marren played secure defense as posts, allowing the Bridgeport girls to score only 12 points. Every Wave player got in the game and on the board tonight, and with the second quarter and the Wave already winning 28 to 4, five new players stepped onto the court. Junior Amy Biggart saw time as point guard, with senior captain Shannon Burke and freshman Caroline Zaffino as posts, and sophomore Ali Aparicio and junior Susan Biggart on the wings. Zaffino ended the night with a total of six points scored, followed by Aparicio with four, Burke and Susan Biggart with two apiece, and Amy Biggart’s outstanding contribution of foul shots. By half time, the Blue Wave was ahead 39-8, and proved no let down in the second half, adding another 26 points. This win should give the team confidence for its game on Friday (12/17) against a tough Trumbull High School team at 7pm at Trumbull.
