West Haven Delivers Another Loss to Boys’ Hockey

-By: Taiki Miki-

The Darien hockey team (0-2-0) lost its second game of the season to West Haven (1-0-1) 6-4 on Saturday. (12/18) Last year, in the first round of the state tournament, Darien upset top-ranked West Haven 4-3. In this game, the Blue Wave team could not conjure the magic of that game. The team got off to a horrible start. The game started off with an early goal from West Haven and then another goal later in the first period. But in the second period, the team came out roaring. The Blue Wave offense, led by co-captains seniors Richard Gregory and Nick Bruno, and assistant captain senior Garren Fritts buffeted the opposing goalie with shots. However, they could not capitalize until Fritts scored with 8:41 remaining in the second period. “We have to get more shots when we get inside the blue,” senior forward Alex Peter said. However, with a few seconds remaining in the second period, West Haven scored again. The third period was a disaster for the hockey team. The Blue Wave hockey team played very sloppily, allowing West Haven to score three goals early on junior goalie Hunt Bartram. However, the team recuperated with a wraparound goal from Gregory and a slapshot from the point by senior captain Doug Miller. With 1:44 remaining, Fritts added another goal. However, even after pulling the goalie, the team did not have enough to time to complete the comeback. “We have to play the full 45 minutes. We took the first period off,” Peter said. The Darien Blue Wave ice hockey has its next game against rival New Canaan Rams on Monday at 4pm at the Darien Ice Rink.
