Sophomores Dominate Girls' Track First Showing

By McKinley Stauffer:

Girl’s indoor track had its first practice meet at the Hillhouse field in New Haven on Saturday. (12/11) The purpose of this meet was to give new coming freshmen and trackies a chance to experience racing in an indoor event. While this meet does not count towards Darien’s season, everyone put their best foot forward. Sophomores Liz Heaney and Sophie Long had outstanding times for both the 55 meter dash and 300 meter. Heaney finished the 300 meter in 46. 74 seconds, with Long following behind at 49.24 seconds. Sophomore Eleanor Smith made a name for Darien in the hurtles and long jump. She jumped 4 feet and 11 inches, and finished the hurtles in 11.30 seconds. The team’s sophomores may have done well, but the freshmen made an impact in the debut. Freshman Dillon Schoen finished the mile in 6 minutes and 2 seconds after completing the 300 meter in roughly 47 seconds. Catherine Lacey, another freshman, has become a huge asset for the sprinting and long jump events. She jumped 14ft and 11 inches, and completed the 55 meter dash in 7.78 seconds. But it wasn’t just the runners who were successful at this meet, junior Victoria Kominek threw her personal best in shot put today, 30 feet exactly. Judging by this initial meet, the girl’s are in for a successful season. Come cheer on the team at the Reindeer Relay this Saturday (12/18) at Wilton High School.
