Boys' Basketball Records First Win of Season Against Trumbull

By Jay Alter:

The boys' basketball team has been known for the last four seasons as "non-competitive." Last year the team went 1-19 and its head coach Tom O'Donnell resigned. The Wave then brought in Darien High School Graduate Kyle Marian to run the show. Coach Marian and his boys welcomed the Trumbull Eagles on Friday night (12/17) for the home opener. The place was electric. The student section was getting the team fired up and they fed off it. Senior captain Ian Sullivan scored the Wave's first 8 points. This helped give the Wave confidence to take a 12-point lead into halftime. Coach Marian said at the half, "We just gotta keep playing our game and remember you gotta play four quarters to win a basketball game." And then Coach Marian pointed to the quote he hung on the gym wall, "It starts with 1". That one victory could be the one that begins to turn this basketball program around. On Friday they got that one win: The Blue Wave won an FCIAC game for the first time in two and a half seasons. Sophomore Matt Forelli and senior Graham Hotchkiss were big in the paint and senior Chris Allam did a good job on defense and keeping the energy high. The Blue Wave won 49-42 in semi-route fashion as they held a double digit lead for most of the second half. The Wave will try to keep the momentum going with a victory over arch rival New Canaan at New Canaan at 7pm on Tuesday. (12/21)
